Contract vs Permanent Work in Construction: Which is Better?

Contract vs Permanent Work in Construction: Which is Better?

We get asked this all the time — and honestly, there’s no right answer.

Whether contract or permanent work is “better” really depends on the person, the project, and where you are in your career. At Rogers McHugh Recruitment, we recruit for both, so we see the pros and cons every day — from both sides of the fence.

So if you’re weighing up your options, here’s a quick look at the differences.

🔧 Contract Work – Flexibility, Fast Pace, Big Projects

For some people, contract work is spot on. You get paid well, often more per day than in a perm role, and you get stuck into big, fast-paced projects. It’s ideal if you like variety and don’t mind moving around a bit.

The good bits:

  • Higher day rates

  • Flexibility to take time off when you want

  • Great for specialists or those who want to work on big-name projects

Things to think about:

  • Once the job ends, you’re back on the hunt

  • No sick pay, holiday pay, or pensions (unless you go through an umbrella)

  • You need to be organised – invoices, tax, compliance etc.

If you’re confident in your skills and enjoy a bit of freedom, it can be a great choice.

🏗️ Permanent Work – Stability, Progression, Long-Term Value

Permanent roles offer structure. You know what you’re earning, where you’re going, and who you’re working with week in, week out. There’s training, progression and (let’s be honest) peace of mind.

The good bits:

  • Monthly income that’s steady and reliable

  • Paid holidays, sick leave and pension contributions

  • Opportunity to grow with a company long-term

Things to consider:

  • Lower day-to-day earnings compared to contracting

  • Less flexibility when it comes to hours or location

  • You might be on the same project or site for a long time

If you’re looking to settle in, build a career or want a bit more security – perm is probably for you.

💬 So, which is better?

Truth is, neither’s better across the board. It depends on your situation, goals and lifestyle.

Some of our candidates start on contract roles and move into perm roles later. Others stick to freelance work their whole careers. We’re here to support either route — and if you're not sure which is right for you, we’re always happy to chat it through.

At the end of the day, it’s about finding what works for you — and making sure you’re getting the right support, rate and respect wherever you land.
